CareerBuilder's new marketing tool - Sexual Innuendo!!

There has been alot of discussion about an advert for CareerBuilder that went a little too far. It was so close to the mark that YouTube pulled the video and Cheezhead gave it an R rating. See what you think, but beware those of you, who are easily offended you might feel the need to sit down!! Feel free to laugh loudly but this was meant to be a serious production !!

Motivational tactics just got worse - the Japanese Company Song!!

It feels like it is Japanese week with this second post to do with that country, but I can assure you it is a pure coincidence!! The latest Japanese trend to hit these shores is the company song - apparently it builds a cohesive company culture!! So as a new recruit to a Japanese company, the first thing you do is to learn the new jingle - better than an induction course?? How motivated would you be singing these words each day....

" Flap your wings, carry hope on your shoulders, hand in hand, Ito Yokado people will make a rainbow across the world"

Worryingly KPMG, Ernst & Young and Shell have now recorded songs, with Shell's being as follows:

"We have moved on, growing day by day, sharing strenths, we practice what is best. We are all part of Shell's global family, Doing work aligned with everyone"

Now for the REAL TREAT!! Here is a video from a Japanese demolition company with the song they sing. It is a translated version. Stay with it, it is very funnily bad!!

Angry If you thought this was just a bit of fun, you would be wrong. The latest Fish4jobs survey on the office environment have highlighted some real irritating behaviours that eats away at office moral, and subsequently job satisfaction. How many of these can you tick off in your office?

  1. 1.Not showering – Around two thirds (59%) said poor personal hygiene was the worst sin that colleagues could commit
  2. Loud mouth - Shouting in the office and generally making a racket winds almost half of us up (44%)

  4. Email calamity - Crashing email systems by sending huge attachments around the entire company sent a third of those surveyed running for the door (31%)
  5. Stale cooking smells from last night – Insisting on re-heating last night’s smelly dinner annoys almost a quarter of workers (22%)
  6. Mess – 15% of people surveyed said colleagues’ messy desks made the whole office look like a dump!
  7. Clickety click– Constant pen clicking drives over one in ten of us insane (14%)
  8. P*** ***F! – One in ten (10%) of us are seriously put off by foul language

Stressed after a bad day? - try a Carry On film!!

Carryonscreaming Ever had a stressful day at work, and looked for a way to unwind after work? Beer, wine or a game on the Nintendo Wii might be the way forward for you normally to unwind (or a 700 mile run if your name is Peter Gold!). But Brian Barwick, the CEO of the Football Association, has a different way of unwinding.......he relaxes in front of the TV watching Carry On Films!! Apparently they have helped him through many a depression, after watching the England football team's bad performances!!

So the next time you have had a bad day, and arrive home stressed, why don't you sit down and watch Carry on Screaming and see if you it helps out your relaxation levels!!

Recruitment the Trinny & Susannah way!

Trinny_and_susannah While having breakfast this morning, my local radio show were promoting a recruitment campaign with a difference!! It did stop me eating my toast for minute, as it got my attention! Trinny and Susannah were recruiting volunteers to appear in a naked sculpture in Sussex over this weekend for their latest TV show - 'Great British Body'!!

However there were none of the usual recruitment incentives, no 'stripping off' bonus, no 'retention bonus' (for holding the stomach in!) and no free lunch - just the privilege of being naked on National television! But as I said, it did get my attention, and I listened. Maybe there is something that companies advertising on the radio could tap into - just insert the word naked into their advert maybe??

(Good news is, it will be the hottest day of the year - weather wise of course -  in Sussex this weekend!!)

Shut up baldy and get a life!!!

J0402574_2  It does seem that I am on rant mode this week, but you will see why I had to have another one today.

A stupid Scottish prat (you will see why I give him this title in a moment) called James Campbell, last week lost a claim at a Scottish employment tribunal over disability. But before all you politically correct individuals start to get your temperature up, let me tell you why he was at the tribunal - he felt that being bald was a bona fide disability!!  He claimed that he was harassed by pupils at his school (where he was a teacher), because of his bald head!!! (I think you might find the real reason James was that you were a complete twat!!)

How the hell can you view baldness as a disability? What's next nose-ism, ear-ism or even bigfeet-ism?Fortunately the Judge saw him coming and ruled that he must wear a toupee every day for 6 months as punishment.

Skippy the Kangaroo does retail!!

J0403190 ************ warning - bad puns in this post !!! ***************

Staff retention utilising Kangaroos may seem a little strange on the surface, but once you delve into the pouch a bit further , there is a little more bounce to this tail.

Retail Week has this week highlighted how Indian retailer Shoppers Stop value staff retention, and have developed a programme for developing their store managers and category managers. They call these managers Baby Kangaroos, and their mentors Kangaroos.
Kangaroos by nature keep their young - also known as Joey's - close by, feeding and nurturing them, until they are ready to be stand on their own two feet. What a great working analogy to staff mentoring!

It would be 'roo-d of me not to mention that this innovative idea does appear to have legs to it, and it would be great to hear of any other animal analogy mentoring schemes out there.

Looking like Chewbacca is not funny.......no its not funny!!

Chewbacca_2Ever wondered about the impact of looking like a gorilla with a full on hairy body? You know the sort - a walking shagpile rug? Well over on RecruitingBlogs.com this very subject has caused alot of humour and amusement!!

Claudia Faust started it all off with the aptly titled Hair of the Dog post and, well it sort of went from there! Follow the comments (on to page two) and you will start to understand the mentality of recruiters!!!

(Looks like the Yankees new pitcher needs a new wax!! Am I allowed to say that? Am I being hairist?)

Is this new Job Board lost in translation?

Finadwork When you start with a grammatically bad name in the first place, you are already on a back foot, as this new job board - www.findawork.com - is obviously experiencing! There must have been some better domain names available involving work, if that is what they wanted to use in their name?  Then their strap line, "The best and largest jobs site for UK" , just makes it look like a bad Chinese translation!! Maybe they should have gone for Jobinawok.com?? It seems that grammar and spelling are just not on their agenda on this site, even if they do come from Lodnon!!!

And what are they doing to substantiate their claim of being the 'best and largest jobs site for UK'? Absolutely nothing - as you will see they have absolutely no jobs advertised on their site?? I must check the calender today, it's not still April Fools day is it?

Recruiters have been known to stretch the truth.....once or twice!!

After sharing with everyone some of the crap that comes out of candidates during the interview process, I thought I should even it up with some b******s from the recruiters angle!! Of course this is all hearsay (!!), as I just can't believe we have been known to use any of these, can you??!! Go on, how many have you heard us utter?

  1. Research shows = I’ve made this up
  2. To tell you the truth = I’m lying
  3. Honestly speaking = I’m still lying
  4. Most of our clients = One or two
  5. This candidate is the best around = I’ve only got this one guy
  6. I’ve had a lot of xxxx experience = I’m new to recruitment though
  7. In a manner of speaking = I’m waffling
  8. At the end of the day = You’re not going to go ahead are you?
  9. Feel free to think about it = Now I know you aren’t going ahead!
  10. I've spoken to him myself = I've emailed him
  11. He's interviewing elsewhere = He's sat at home watching Trisha
  12. I haven't got my notes in front of me = I've never asked the candidate that query but will do
  13. I've had a message from him indicating he enjoyed the interview = Haven't spoken to him yet but now that it may be an offer you bet I will
  14. They've filled the job internally = You're not good enough but I don't have the strength or patience to argue this point with you.
  15. I'm on the phone / in a meeting = I'm eating breakfast
  16. You look an extremely good match for the role I'm recruiting for = There must be something wrong with you, what is it?
  17. This role offers significant professional development opportunities for you = Just take the darn job
  18. You can apply internally for any other role after 6 months = I know this job is rubbish but keep trying and you'll find a good one there…
  19. You can work flexitime = The traffic is a nightmare, this at least means you have a change to get there on time
  20. I've been meaning to call you / you were next on my list = I've been trying to avoid speaking to you
